Epoxy paint question

Hello all,

I am finally hitting a nice patch of weather and may have the opportunity to get the primer and Perfection paint on my boat. The original owner painted the hull all the way to the top of the sides, past the rub rail. It just makes sense to paint again after doing the refurbishing I have been doing. I have the primer and paint at the house and after two months of sanding and waiting I am about to start the paint job.

I have read all the painting archives here and else where. I do have a question about painting in areas that are not possible to roll. Should you brush tip the paint after applying it with a wet brush? I have heard if you apply it thin enough you do not need to brush tip it but have never heard what thin enough means as far as the percentage of thinner to use?

"thin enough" to get the results you want-

and don't worry about thinning more than paint manufacturer suggests, it'll be okay, with the tipping method, you'll have to.

The best way I know to get the right thickness is using glass- windows, mirrors, etc.-thin the paint and apply it to the glass... if after 5-10 minutes you still see brush marks, thin some more. I did a Oday22 like this, and you'd swear it was sprayed.

I tried talking to their support when I painted my mast and they told me not to thin and to just paint right out of the can after mixing. The first bit is not very good advice. The second bit is just bad painting practice.

Timcup has the correct thinning procedure that I learned from Don Casey. I have more info here about my mast repaint.

Thanks for the tips guys. I am rather excited about getting this going. I had to wait for what seems like forever to get a good weather window to just fill the rub rail holes with marine caulk so it would cure properly. If the prep work does not drive you batty, the waiting for good weather will!
