Epoxy lump under fuel tank

I have removed the fuel tank from my 1984 C-30 TR for cleaning. Once the tank was removed, I found that the plywood mounting board was in poor shape, so I removed this board as well. The plywood had an 8" hole cut in the center to expose a lump of a rough epoxy/fiberglass strand mixture on the hull. This lump is about 10" across and about 4" think in the center. I don't understand what it is so don't know if this is some quick hull fix by a PO or original from the factory. It seems to be directly over the prop strut. Can anyone help me understand the structure in this part of the boat? How should the strut attach to the hull? Should the fitting from the strut be visible? I appreciate any opinions about this. Thanks, Bill

Strut

It's where the strut is glassed to the hull. My 86 looks the same, big glob of fiberglass. Make sure it's not touching the bottom of the fuel tank. Mine was, rubbed a hole in the bottom of the tank and dumped several gallons of diesel into the bilge where it was then pumped out the stern by the bilge pump. Luckily I just happened to have the boat hauled so it didn't leave a slick in the harbor.

thanks

Thanks, Ron - the blob of epoxy is not touching the fuel tank. I am glad to hear that this is the "Catalina" way of finishing this area. It is quite a mound! BILL
