Know your hardner

If you use the West Epoxy system and plan to overcoat with a uv coating like polyurethane be sure that you check out that you are using the correct hardner because if you don't have the right hardner the polyurthane will not dry. I know I had to redo my project and strip everything. It took an additional 30 hours of work when it only should have been total job of maybe four hours.. West Marine made the reccomendations as to hardner and at least replaced material

Some rapid cure epoxies have a film

Some rapid cure epoxies leave an amine film that needs to be scrubbed off of lightly sanded before recoating with itself or any varnish or urethane. Most will tell you on the container. Thanks for the comment Chris.

Can you please give more details on your problem. Are you referring to the hardener for the West System Epoxy or the Hardener for a 2 component urethane? I am under the impression that once the molecules from the epoxy cross-link and the epoxy has cured, the epoxy is more or less inert. Any solvents normally used with single component or 2 component urethanes are or should be compatable with epoxies. I purchase from West Marine often so I hope i dont come across the same problem. Please let me know which brand of polyurehane and which hardener you used and also which West System epoxy and which hardener you used. Also to note, all epoxies including epoxy paints exude an amine, which is kinda like a wax, and is referred to as amine blush. The best wat to remove it is with soapy water followed by fresh water. If you sand it, you will be sanding it into the surface, which is what you dont want to do.

Because

I asked for details only because I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing. Maybe he didnt explain it right. I'm guilty of that a lot. It makes sense when i'm writing it, but the next day i'll look at it and think "was in a coherent state"? LOL
