I don't have one but I think this new SPOT device is interesting and may be the economical answer for the coastal cruiser. This is probably not anyone doing more than close to shore coastal cruising - they should spend the $ for a real EPIRB.

I rent mine
Boat US will rent an EPIRB for $50. a week When I take a trip that will carry me 60+ miles off shore, I rent one for that emergency that we hope never comes up. I also carry a ditch bag and a hend held VHF radio to put in the dink. It's cheeper for me to pay a $100 a year than to buy one, and replace the battery every 5 years. ;D

I saw an ACR 2775 at defender. I am looking to take my 36 to Florida and may make some in and out of the ditch depending on weather. Nick

I am thinking of heading south in Oct. But nothing is written stone and it could all change, still sorting things out and have different possible plans, thinking with a delivery captain part of the trip off shore or with my crew down the ditch with other boats or crew who have done it before. Like I said still in planning stage. Nick

Seadaddler, Don't wait very late in October to leave
You are at least a week away from the Chesapeake Bay and the run donwn the Bat should allow a week. We won't go out after the middle of October without cold weather gear on the boat.

Does anyone know what the water resistance of these is. I looked but didn't see any mention of that. They look very good but if not waterproof they would be useless in my mind for boating purposes

According to the company website specification sheet (link below): It floats and is waterproof at 1m for 30 minutes.

Thanks Roy. I didn't find that. Based on the water resistance and other features these look like they might be a good inexpensive alternative to the PLB type EPIRB's for coastal cruisers. It will be interesting to see how they do in the market. Jim. You are quite right about the flotation, but better to have a handheld unit that you can afford than not have anything when you need it because it was beyond your budget. (just my opinion of course) Cheers

Seadaddler, Have made the trip south for the past couple of years. Last year we left in mid Oct. and it was cold but not too bad. Year before we left first week of Nov. and nearly froze to death. Earlier is better. If I were to do this again, I think that Oct. 1st would be the latest for me. But now I am hearing that insurance will not cover boats that leave before Nov.1st. So what do you do.

I am still planning and checking more things out,my crew so far is iffy so could be a problem. Big family thing going on Oct 17 so would leave next day or two. I would love any help with info and advice on making the trip,my insurace claims 75 miles off shore and not saying too much any problem insuring in Florida waters. Right now in NY packing sold house and going back to Florida next week,setting up house and wife going shopping and decorating. Will be back in NY in April and give it one more year sailing in NY. is based on globalstar satelites. Anyone whoever uses globalstar sat phone communications seems to not recommend them for such ... as spotty coverage historically seems to be a 'problem'. I think I will wait on SPOT until there is a good track record.
