Since it was always a hassle to move the standard ladder to get to the storage space below the cockpit in a SanJuan 7.7, I used the ladder as a supply of matching teak and fabricated steps that are attached to the storage compartment door. I added an extra twist catch to absorb the extra torque on the door.. And make the lower step a little deeper than the upper one.. Make sure your hinges are sound and strong, also. I'm guessing that other SJ's use the same 'ladder' entry into the cabin, and when there's not a lot of extra room, you get creative...
