In the closing stages of buying a hunter 31 and I'm wondering whether the 18hp diesel is enough power. Any input?

Should be enough.

Hi Terry, My old H37C displaces over 8 tons and has the original 20HP Yanmar. I'm amazed at how well it powers through Lake Erie's six footers. But I am replacing the stock prop this Spring.

Sure!

My h310 does great with the 2GM20. You should be fine.

If it runs properly

When you do your sea trials on the boat, be sure that the engine will rev to 3600rpm under full throttle while motoring. The engine normally runs at 2600-2900 while crusing (this should be the approx hull speed). If you are like the majority of the H'31 owners you will love this boat. Lots of room and fun to sail.

I agree, and...

...I would go with a 3-blade feathering prop to reduce vibration and get additional power. Tons of articles and comments on props here. Check the archives as well.

Just Fine

I recently found myself out in steady thirty knot winds, and the corresponding mayhem that goes with this, and had no trouble powering into the wind at over six knots for a sustained period. Some of the HOW owner reviews talk about the 2GM being underpowered, but I have not found this to be the case. The engine does rev as described in the previous post.

No choice

I suppose you don't have much choice , as on this size you don't have another option for engine. Theoretically, one will like to have hull speed on cruising RPM, on your boat someting around 7 knots , on about 2800-3000 RPM. Very few production boat have this.Keep in mind that adverse condition (wind, tide, current) can set this aback between 20%-40%. Average faul on hull and propeler will further set you back 10-15% ( that's a thing you won't read about on sailing magazine's boat tests, which are conducted on new, clean and empty boats..).Adding the modern sailor regard for time , especially on cruising, one wonders why manufacturers don't put bigger engines nowdays , at least as an option ,starting 30' footers and up ( their reason that hulls are nowdays more hydrodinamic designed, are only partly good ; foul, current and head wind and waves works the same-or more-in practice to lower boat speed ) . My 29.5 Hunter with same engine but a lighter hull , gets 5.8 kts(not bad) on cruising RPM and calm no wind condition. It gets .5 kts less after an year in the water, even with periodical snorkeling cleaning in summer.. Don't expect better than that .
