Enlarging the holding tank

After two summers in the boat, I think it is time to get a bigger holding tank. I just crawled out from under and the current tank is 9 x 17 x 20 which is 13 gals. I can increase to 20 gals by installing a 14 x 17 x 21. This would require running a new input hose. Has anyone out there installed a bigger tank? How did you do it? How much bigger? Whose tank did you use? . . . Eddie or Greg recommended going to a bladder, said they use these for European deliveries due to dumping laws.

I think Peggy gets on her soapbox about bladders. Because I'm thinking of doing a similar project, I will be intersted to see what she says.

I don't like bladders...

The reasons are explained in the article "Holding Tank Odor--Odor Out the Vent." Jim, you may be able to find room for an even larger tank, if the tank isn't rectangular...take a look at the Ronco Plastics website (http://ronco-plastics.com) They make top quality thick-walled tanks and have more than 400 shapes and sizes to choose from. And you can spec the fittings sizes and locations when you order the tank. However--the larger the tank, the more storage space you lose to it, and a 26' boat doesn't have much storage space to spare...so I'd keep it around 20 gallons max and do what you can to conserve space by limiting flush water. How to do that is explained the article "Flush With Success." This has to be my last post...it's time to take my computer down to box it up to move it 500 miles.

Jim, My 95 H26 was converted to a marine head

by the first owner. It has a Jabsco head and a 20 gal holding tank. The tank is 30x16x10 and the part number in the West Marina cat. is 486746. I am not sure that this tank is/was the exact one they sell because mine has a 4 or 5 inch cleanout port on top. The tank is mounted on the port side under what was a hanging clothes locker. It is low enough so that the upper 2/3 of the space is still useable. We spend at least 2 to 4 days a week in the summer on the boat and pump the tank every other week. We have made trips of up to 8 days without pumping out, but then there are only the two of us. Ray S/V Speedy

wine casks work well

We take the bladders out of wine casks , rince them and fill with fresh water. They are tough and will fit in all those small places. Also prevents a large tank going smelly when you don't use most of the water.

Bladder works well

I chnaged my rigid tank to a bladder at the beguinning of the summer, changed the hoses to a higher grade, the brand I choosed was Vetus, I was able to double the capacity, worked very well, no smell at all. A little expensive but of very high quality. Make sure you change all hoses to their specs. I shared Peggy's reluctance but the experience made a beleiver out of me. J. Hrab

Joan lets me play with this one a lot more than any of our other boats. She is just glad it not bigger or I would find more goodies. BTW, I'm waiting for Peggy to get back on-line so I can ask more about bladders. Jim S/V Java
