I have recently been toying with the idea of enlarging the scuppers on my Hunter 25.5. And I mainly have two reasons. First since the scuppers are not the lowest point in the cockpit the water doesn't completely drain out which leaves alot of dirt and gunk also. And secondly because for the phrf equipment rating I would like to get requires have scuppers that have more area that the ones currently on the boat. So I was thinking of enlarging the scuppers to increase the drainage capacity and also lower the bottom edge of the scupper so all the gunk can drain out. So my question is, has anyone else thought of doing this? Has anyone actually done it? Can anyone offer any guidance? Thanks.

Anthony: It is not too big of a deal to have a larger scupper drain in the cockpit. You just need to enlarge the hole and insert the new one. The problem here is that you need to have a large hose and the other end will also need to be increased. Unless you boat has a regular thru hull fitting on the hull end, this may be a little more difficult. Our Hunter has the drain hose attached to a molded in fitting in our hull. To lower the existing drain to make it flush with the sole, you need to get another drain. They can be found in the W/M master catalog (pg 521). They are flush head drains. You will need to cut a taper into the sole, epoxy any exposed plywood and caulk it well.

no hoses on 25.5 scuppers.
The 25.5 scuppers go straight through from the cockpit end to the outboard end right through the transom which is only a inch or so. So there are no hoses. It seems to me all that would be involved in cutting a larger hole and fitting in some kind of flush fitting or maybe even just a tube/pipe like in the Catalina 25.

I have thought about doing this also. My only concern is that to maintain a watertite seal there should be a small amout of flange on whatever fitting is chosen - and that will still be a little higher than the cockpit sole level - although maybe better than what the factory installed. Let us know what you come up with!

Modification on y 25.5
The previous owner of my 25.5 installed a through hull in the low "sump" area (gas tank area) of the cockpit sole. He installed another below the cockpit floor level in the transom near the rudder line and connected the two with hose (no low spot). Works rather well and does not impact the use of the sleeping area significantly.

Tried this myself and it seems to be working
I also wanted to enlarge the scuppers since (1) they didn't completely drain the cockpit, (2) they clogged once and the cockpit was full when I came back to the boat, and (3) they were leaking into the boat, anyway. The plan was to fill the 1.5" gap between the cockpit and transom with epoxy, then drill through and install a larger thru-hull. This way any reasonable chance of a leak would be eliminated regardless of how well the thru-hull was sealed. But still I was stuck with getting a thru-hull that would lie flush with the bottom of the cockpit. As an experiment, I simply drilled the hole through and so far have put no thru-hull in place. So far, I've got a much bigger hole that drains completely, and no leaks, so I'm leaving it that way for now. If the fiberglass and epoxy don't separate (we'll see what happens over the winter), I should be fine. Ultimately I'd like to install and seal a strainless steel tube like the one on my neighbhor's Catalina 22. I should mention I've only done the starboard side (the easy one, since it is in the locker and has no carpet to deal with).
