Engineered Keel Modification, (shortening)

Has anyone taken a deep draft boat and had the keel shortened and bulb added? Wondering what the trade off's are to pointing-up versus down wind performance....not to mention the ability to access the skinny water of the Bahamas...where you could not go before. What other effects did it have on the before/after of your boat?
