I have a M-30 I just bought. Universal is frozen. Can anyone tell me a good replacement engine for this boat. It seems as thought I may be limited since size and location of engine bay are limited(under balley sink/sette area. Would a Yanmar 2gm series fit? Ideas?

Thanks,

Replacement engines

You're correct about size on your boat (assume you meant C30, not M-30).

A friend recently replaced his old M25XP with an M25XPA, essentially the same size, in his C34. Although we have a lot more room in our engine compartments, the motor is pretty much the same size and the hoses connect in the same place. If you change engine manufacturers, you have a lot more work ahead of you for connections of different parts, like exhaust risers, wiring, alternators and electrical wiring. The Yanmars also don't have glow plugs like the Universals do.

I had a Universal 5411 when I bought my boat. It seized, I replaced it with another 5411. The actual install took all of three - four hours total with a hoist.

Also, I know where there is 5411. My old one which is being re manufactured up in WI. I would be happy to give you the guys information. I paid 2700.00 for mine with a new transmission to boot. ALL new internals on both and a year warranty.

Hrm. I think that I would stick with the Universal MX 25. I feel underpowered with that engine at times when I get in nasty stuff so anything less would just be a problem waiting to happen.

You might want to look at Beta Marine engines. I've been considering a repower of my 5411 on my 1983 C30. The 11 HP is generally considered underpowered for the C30. Here's a link: http://www.betamarinenc.com/

They are very familiar with C30's and gave me a couple of options for repower. I know you can reuse parts if you rebuild or buy a rebuilt of the same model, but then those parts are old and subject to failure as well.

Good point on older parts being reused. I replaced the entire drive train from the engine mounts to the castle nut.

I have personally found the 5411 to work just fine for my use, but I am also very new to the game.

I suppose alot of it depends on budget, mine being very limited currently. Damn self employment!
