Talking to a friend who has a powerboat with twin diesels and is having his engine zincs replaced. Apparently they are called "pencil zincs" and they prevent problems in the heat exchanger and the sea water. Does anyone know if the Yanmar 3gm have these?? Bob F.

no zincs

There are no zincs on the small yanmars. According to Yanmar there is no electrolysis to destroy the metal in the engine.

More on engine zincs

I was told by Yanmar that there are no engine zincs on fresh water cooled engines. If you had a raw water version, you would need zincs.

Small Yanmars only have zincs if raw water cooled

Yanmar states this in their engine manuals. I guess their theory is that if you have a heat exchanger, the engine itself is never in contact with sea water, only the heat exchanger and pump, both of which are add-ons to the engine.

Yanmar Zincs

I've got a boat with a Yanmar 2GM20F engine. After looking all over the engine trying to find the pencil zincs that were pictured in the engine manual, I found that the engine referred to in the manual is actually the 2GM20 raw water cooled engine, not the "F" model. Would have helped if Yanmar had made this clearer when writing the manual....
