I have annoying vibration at slow speed which jars the boat and the rigging. Would fitting a PSS Shaft Seal help? If so, is there a PSS Shaft Seal model to fit the Hunter 29.5 (1995/6 model)? How can I order in internet? Regards. Joe Aquilina SY Maverick Valletta - Malta

Vibration

Not necessarily. Could be loose engine mounts, shaft alignment, etc. PSS seals are nice but their purpose is not vibration control. The same company makes a "rubberized doughnut" gizmo that does help lessen natural vibration, but it requires a bit of work to install. Same goes for the PSS seal though, and many owners install both at the same time for that reason.

Vibration

Dear Joe: The PSS shaft seal is a non-supportive device. It will not create support to the shaft nor should your current stuffing box. If the current stuffing box is pulling the shaft to one side of the stern tube placing the shaft out of column, replacing it with a seal, which will not pull it out of column, can reduce this. Your comment states that you are experiencing the vibration at low Rpm’s. If the system were as I described above, your vibration should be present all the time regardless of the shaft speed. This would cause me to start to look at transmission noise such as a damper plate starting to fail and creating noise. Of coarse there is about a 1,000 different items, which could cause what you described. If you describe the noise to us we can hopefully shed more light for you. Sincerely, Kevin L. Woody

I did PSS on my 29.5..

..but I dont remember the type no. It is one of their standard one. It's working now for 4 years with not a single drop of water ,and no mentenance-so far - needed. It has nothing to do with vibration ; I would think that compared to standardly supplied ( driping) shaft seal , which dumpen a little vibrations , this one doesn't do that at all. PSS is eassy to self install ,less messy and safe when the boat out of the water. I too have-always had- quite a lot of vibration compared to other boats (equipped with same Yanmar 2GM20F) but no faulty part found (as well as in-line shaft checks). They are more pronaunced at 1500-2000 rpm , but on all other rpm high as well ( except at 2700-3200 range). Might be something in the design-instalation ; a wild guess is either marginal too long unsuported shaft , or marginal to0 big down-angled of shaft-engine. Any other 29.5 owners 'suffer' from vibration problem ? how was it dealt with ?
