Engine upgrade

Has anyone with a hunter 27 (1978-80) replaced the one cylinder yanmar with a two cylinder? Is it too much power and how satisfied are you?

1980 Hunter 27 Yanmar upgrade

The SS Enterprise has the exact engine upgrade that you are contemplating. It is a wonderful and joyful thing to have the ability to return to your dock any-damn-time that you please. A full outgoing tide no longer holds any terror for me. The increased power has been very helpful on a number of occasions, especially for getting out of the way of the speedy commercial shipping traffic that we often encounter on the Cooper River.I would heartily recommend doing this upgrade. Yanmar upgrade

I just purchased a new Yanmar 2gm, 18 hp replacing my 1gm 8 hp. It is being delivered and installed this week. A big OUCH as far as expenditures. However, piece of mind beating a storm home or making way against a headwind with current makes it well worth the price.(By the way, if you are considering new vs. rebuilt, new goes for $5200 + about $1000 to remove the old 1gm and install. If you are married, your argument for the expense:Over the next 10 years, we can vacation for $620 year. ($6200/10 = $620) In our case, we have 2 children. It would be about $155 per person for lodging for an entire week. ($620/4 = $155)Good luck, John h27

Thanks John and Tom. I have had the same concerns about getting back quick and fighting the tide as well as getting out of the way of freighters at night on the Chesapeake. The cost factor was quite helpful. Thanks again.ciriaco

What Else ??

I'm about to make the change as well. What about controls, transmission, etc. Do these fit the 2GM? Any other hints, suggestions?

buy a new boat! for the money your going to spend it might be better to just get a new boat.
