Profesional advise

How to check for an injector that needs adjustment. Blow a hot hair dryer into the air intake until things are warmed up real well then crank. Seems that a misadjusted injector does not adomize the fuel properly when cold, however when hot the hole is smaller and it works OK. Tried it, it worked. Now to get the injector adjusted.

Jack: One option is to purchase a DC powered hair dryer and keep it aboard (not). If you check with one of the diesel shops they should be able to let you know what type of injectors you have. I doubt that these are unique to Renault. Some of these can be rebuilt and in some cases just replaced for the same price. If you pull the injector and take it into the shop they may be able to ID it for you. I think you do speak french.

Yanmar Solution

My Legend 35.5 had a severe problem with hard starting when cold. After contacting a Seattle Yanmar distributer, I discovered a small company who manufactures an engine preheater that is custom fit for your particular model. Cost was about $200.00. Engine starts perfectly every time now!! Took me about 3 hours to install. I even use it in warm weather for quick starts after engine has sat cold.

Jack I have a renault RC8D I have had it for 2 seasons, have been very happy with its ability to start cold 50 deg F However I do have problems getting it started when I shut the fuel line off and dont use the boat for aboat 15 - 20 days. I believe I am some how getting air in the system, If I leave fuel line open while not using boat for long period of time It starts fine. Do you shut your fuel line off when leaving boat?

Injectors, heat, starter fluid

I have a 2 cyl YANMAR, 20 yo, probably never been overhauled. It does not like cool or cold weather. No glow plugs. Just a "touch" of Starter Fluid (ether) or a touch of WD 40 and it starts right up. I had some rough running and replaced both fuel injectors. Best $150 I have spent but it still does not like the cold. Some people say that ether is the kiss of death but the it's use originated for the big 18 wheeler diesels and some actually had ether injection systems installed after market. I read about the pre-heater in one of the other messages and that sure sounds like the best method but I still would never be without my Starting Fluid. Now air in the fuel system is also a plague.
