Engine temperature rise

Hi All,

Went out sailing Friday night. On the way back turned on the yanmar 2gm20f and noticed it was not expelling enough water. Engine temp got close to 180 before I made it to port and shut it down. Normal temp is just around 150 or so. Question is: is there any thing I should look for? I cleaned the milfoil out of the intake and all is running well now. Thanks

You probably nailed it already

Low flow can be cause by a number of things
Check the easy stuff first
Strainer basket full of grass
collapsed feed hose (have to have the engine running to see this)
impeller missing fins
mixing elbow clogged

Since this happened suddenly I'm betting on the strainer basket being cloged

A stuck thermostat is also a possibility. It usually happens in cold weather and shortly after startup where the thermostat fails to open after the engine has reached its operating temperature. How cold is that water in MN?

Actually the strainer was clear.it's a pretty easy diagnosis when you take the line off the thru hull valve and no water comes in and then clear it with a dowel and have a nice little gusher! My main concern was the engine temp going up to the 180 mark for a few minutes and if that posed any danger to the engine.

Temp of 180 isn't going to hurt the engine. For a diesel that's probably low... I would think the thermostat had been opening too soon. I would think 190 would be more normal.

If its out of the ordinary for your engine, and you're not spitting water out of the exhaust, I would suspect that the water pump impeller is a culprit.

If the engine has been running a cold as 150, there is a possibility that that your mixing elbow has a blockage as well.

180 won't hurt anything and as long as you have cleared the water flow you got nothing to worry about !

I had a similar problem two years ago when I installed one of those Globe (blue) impellers. The thing lost two blades after about 10 hours of service. Anyway, my water temp went to about 180 but the engine did not get any hotter. I changed out the impeller and had to pull the hose to the heat exchanger to retreive the two missing blades. They were just inside the heat exchange intake and I could get to them with a pair of tweezers.
