Hunter 27' 1980 Does anyone know if you can swap in a Yanmar for a Renault? And if so do the motor mounts, shaft or other componets have to be changed?

I did search

I did search the forum archives and only found two matches that seemed appropriate. One said that the Yanmar could be dropped in but was very vague - didn't mention if new trany needed or shaft. Second said new engine would be expensive but didn't quantify, $1000, $2000, $3000? I have called a Yanmar distributor and left a msg. Any input would be appreciated.

Swapping Engines

Which Yanmar are you considering? If the YSM12 be aware this is very marginal for the 27.I am not familiar with the Renault engine but would imagine very simular configuration to YSM.I replaced YSM with Yanmar 2GM20F several years ago and it is straight forward easy swap.Mine was new engine and was not cheap then and definitely would be more expensive today. All totalled, engine, shaft, prop, controls and misc.came to about 5000 1990 dollars. Was it worth it?Hell yes!

More on swap

Wanted stainless shaft so replaced.Did need to change controls from 2 lever to single lever, and had to reprop to match engine. If you are thinking on YSM route, may not need new prop, shaft or controls.Your shaft is probably 1"so if in good shape no need to replace.Unless buying from rebuilder, usually transmission comes with engine

Price / performance.

There have been some 2QM20 Yanmars on the market. That is the diesel that is in my H37C. It would be cheap and plenty of power for the H27 IF it would fit. I have all the dimensions if it is something you want to pursue. The 2GM is a much better solution. It would be new, small, and light. But probably $6000. compared to $2000.

Mike...

The engine room is kind of small on a 27. If I were repowering one I'd go for a 1GM10, The engine will come with a new transmission, coupler and panel. It's going to set you back about $4500.00. You'll still need to reprop most likely. The engine bed shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks Everyone!

I'm buying a H27 Tuesday and wanted to be sure of most potential future costs. Since the Renault engine has such bad press I wanted to be sure I understood the cost of replacing it. I checked out the price of sails in the chandlery. The boats only had two owners. It's a 1980 and the second owner has had it since 1981. He's kept very good care of it. Hull and deck are fine, no blisters, very few fine cracks around the mast step. I've looked at a couple of other H27s and this one looks like a keeper. The gentleman who owns it is having a last weekend with his family on it. Then next weekend it's mine! He lives in the area and seems like a real nice guy (77 yrs old) so I'll ask him to come out with me in the future. Thank you all for the help and guidance which has made the decision to buy this boat easy.

Welcome to the "club" Mike.

Hope we'll see you around here from time to time. You might have a question or two after you take ownership. If not then just let us know how she sails. :)

Yarmar an easy swap

The Yanmar reps I spoke to at the Chicago Strictly Sail said the 1GM/2GM swaps are easy. Having said that, the sway--even with a used engine--is gonna run you near what a 1980 H27 would cost! Our Renault is a sturdy little (underpowered/hard-to-find-parts-for) powerplant.

Just bought the boat (H27) today!

Well, I carefully considered the possible downsides - new sails, new engine - and am now the proud owner of an 1980 Hunter 27! It's now in my slip at the end of our block. Securely tied - tied up first at low tide, adjusted a couple of times before and at high tide. Just checked her now, next low at 2am. I'll check her at least once before then. Will make damn sure to mark the lines once I'm satisfied. Been a number of years but I'll braid up some lines when I'm happy. I'm 'sleeping' on the couch. Wife doesn't seem to appreciate the finer points of tying up a boat so it doesn't hit a piling, bulkhead or finger dock and seeing if moving the boat up and down a couple of feet doesn't cause a bit too much or little tension. Lord knows what she'd say if I didn't check it and a cleat got pulled out (or worse). I am one HAPPY man. Hey even my wife's excited!

Mike's insomnia

Well we all know why Mike can't sleep... kinda like the night after my first set of HO trains got set up. And we all know how that kind of thing is. JC
