My Hunter 28.5 has a pull knob that is used to stop the diesel. I believe this is standard for all diesels. What is it actually doing? Is it choking the engine somehow or is this the decomprssion lever that I have read about. Secondly this pull knob was very very stiff and so I have removed it. Where is a good place to get a replacement? I was hoping to find an inexpensive alternative before I call Hunter. I appreciate your comments, your suggestions always help.

I relocated mine.

Ben: I relocated mine on our H'31. We no longer have it in the control panel. We had a problem that caused the cable to corrode and we were no longer able to pull it without using two hands. I got a short cable and a mounting kit from Morse. I then mounted the new cable on the engine compartment. The cable has been in place for about 10-11 years and works like the day we put it in.

Just replaced one

Went to Yanmar it cost just over $18 plus tax. Yanmar recommended pulling the cable every year lubbricating it.

Answer to Ben's first question

Ben, I see you're getting good info on replacement but your original question is getting ignored. The answer is: You are shutting off the engines fuel supply. this is a fuel cut-off cable. No fuel, no run. Note that it is suggested that the engine idle for 5 minutes and be at idle prior to pulling lever. As you know, turning off key will not stop the engin. Doug

no knob

I have to shut my engine down by throttling down. There is no pull knob on my boat. Is this a problem ? I though this cuts the fuel at the right location. The engine(yanmar) always starts on the first revolution of the starter even after a few days of being secured. thanks John(1975 27')

Fuel Cut off cable

Had the same problem (88 H28.5) ... took the cable out and lubricated it, now it works fine...

Alternatives:

You can: 1:If the old cable is intact remove it, soak it in paint thinner to dissolve the old dried lubricant, relube and reinstall. 2: Buy and install a morse Red Jacket cable. It should never need lubrication. 3: KEEP THE STOP CABLE IN THE COCKPIT!! In addition to acting as-your day to day engine stop, it also acts as the EMERGENCY STOP in the event something goes wrong with the governor system. Unlike a gasoline engine, under certain circumstances a diesel can run away. A runaway diesel will continue to gain speed untill internal parts find their way outside. It's a very rare occurance, but if it happens you want to be able to shut it down instantly.

Sam, whats a morse Red Jacket cable

Sam, thank you for the suggestions. I don't mean to be dense, but I'm not familiar with a morse red jacket cable. Please explain if you will. Or anyone else who knows. These suggestions are really helping, thanks guys. Ben

Morse red jacket!

Morse is just a brand of cable. They are very high quality. They are also found at most boat shops (both power and sail).

teflon coated bicycle cable

I'm a big cyclist. Replaced my cable with a teflon coated bicycle cable...cheaper and better than anything else out there....

More Morse

The Morse Red Jacket cable I put in has a solid steel (stainless) wire with a plastic outer casing with no metal support that I've been able to determine. The wire slides easily inside the casing with no need for lubrication and no rust to add friction. Teleflex is the other well known maker and undoubtedly has a similar cable. Mine is mounted with a pretty chromed bracket that aims the "T" handle downward so water can't enter.

Napa Auto Cable

I replaced the one on my 1980 H27 with a cable and knob from NAPA auto parts store. About $14 and is still working 3 years later. Before I installed it, I pulled the cable from the housing and pumped as much silicone lub into housing as it would take. then I put cable back in. Even knob is still shiney!

Use the cable shut-off

According to everything I've read about shutting down the engine it is advised to use the cable shut-off. The alternator may be damaged if turned off at the switch first.....?
