I have a 2004 Hunter 41 with a 4 cylinder Yanmar. It has a red engine stop button in the cockpit electrical panel, probably similar to many other Hunter models. On a recent sailing trip, I found that the button does not stop the engine. I opened the panel and removed and tested the button with a continuity tester and the switch itself is operating correctly. How does this button kill the engine and where do I start looking for a fix? It is obviously an electrical issue that by pressing the button, something happens to shut the engine down. By the way, I learned where to kill the engine manually by pushing the solenoid on the engine and I recommend that everyone locate this, as a safety precaution in case you ever have difficulty killing the engine.

Electric Solenoid
Bob, My boat is not a 41 but it is an '04 with the Yanmar control panel. On mine the red button labeled 'Stop' energizes the solenoid you are referring to to kill the engine. Mine will work with the key in either position. I would start by jumping the solenoid to check its operation and if it functions properly you're left with the button or wiring.

Bob If you want, I can copy and email you the relevent page from the engine service manual incl the schematic. It says "Electric Engine Stopping Device - the stop lever of the fuel injection pump is connected to the solenoid with a connection metal. The device is operated by the stop switch on the instrument panel." The drawings show the wiring harness, relay and solenoid. What the switch appears to do is activate a relay which, in turn, activates the engine stop solenoid which mechanically rotates the engine stop lever on the fuel pump. My guess is one of three things: bad ground connection, bad relay or bad solenoid.

I had the same thing happen on my 40.5. Turned out to be a connector right behind the control panel. The connector vibrates loose every once in a while, and the engine won't shut off.

Here's the plan, based on your responses
I will test voltage on the load side of the button/switch first, then will test voltage at the solenoid. If there's voltage at the solenoid when the button is pushed, then probably is a bad solenoid. If no voltage at the solenoid when the button is pushed, then will check wiring between the switch and the solenoid. If someone disagrees with this, please let me know. Also, a copy of the service manual page would be great. I'm sure I have it in my manual, but I'm in NJ and the boat's in Florida and I would like to have some idea of what to expect when I go back down in a couple of weeks. Thanks, everyone. could be even simpler
On my 410 the stop button stopped working because a small screw came off of the stop lever on the fuel pump. I was lucky enough even to find the little screw in the bilge and pop it back in. Check to make sure it is not just a small mechanical problem like that. Sometimes you get lucky.
