Engine stalls...

I have a 5hp 2 cycle Mercury for a kicker on my H23. Three years old. I've run maybe a gallon and a half a year through it getting in and out of the fleet at the mooring. Runs fine in neutral while I'm on the ball... I can let it run twenty minutes and it doesn't even sputter. When I release the mooring ball and head out, or worse, when I'm trying to get back to the ball without bouncing off closely spaced hulls, it stalls and is hard to get started again. After I'm back on the ball and in neutral I can start it up and it will run fine. I replaced the fuel filter and the fuel but she still wants to stall at the worst possible time. Any suggestions?

The only real idea that comes to mind is take it to a shop. The engine runs well except under load. The shop will put it in a tank and run it in gear. It will be a lot easier to diagnose. And except for the hassle and time should not cost you very much. It sounds like a fuel problem. In the old days it would have been carburetor adjustment and/or dirt. But I have no experience with the current motors. A faulty plug might be a problem. But usually that will also cause hard starting. Good luck.

Engine stalls

I had a problem like yours some time ago with a small Evinrude. I assume you have tried changing the spark plug and checking to see that all wire connections are clean and tight? I suggest first trying one of those "tune-up sprays" which you need to use and let sit in the carburetor for a few hours to burn up any varnishing you may have. In my case, I needed to rebuild the carburetor as a tiny speck of dirt there will screw up performance badly in a small engine. Rebuild kits are inexpensive and not hard to do. Hardest part is working in a small space with very small parts. Good luck.

2 Cycle Madness

2 Cycle motors are diabolical. Doesn't matter if it's a boat, lawn mower or weed wacker. My Sears 5 hp Gamefisher runs anywhere from perfect to not at all, with me doing nothing different. I'm refurbishing an H23 and hung a 20 year old 7.5 Honda 4 cycle off the mount last night and connected a hose to run water through the intake for a test. After I figured out the connections, it fired right up and shifted easily. Even has alternator output. Sorry I'm not helping, Steve, but I needed to vent a bit on this subject.
