I have changed the filter from a 2 micron to a 10 micron.and I checked the strainer it is stainless, clean and clear. I will be taking the boat out Sunday and will run it for a good long time. we will see what happens. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

John, idle is a little low for that engine should be around 825 to 875 rpm at idle. May want to set it up just a tiny bit.

thanks for the tip on the idle speed. There is nothing in the owners engine manual that has been of much use to me.
We took the boat out on sunday 12 to 15 knots and gusting. Reefed main and smokin'. Great day.
Coming back in it would not idle. God, docking raises the blood pressure.
Consulted with a mechanic who serviced the boat for the PO, He said that yanmar 's fuel pump is a weak point (not his exact words).
The amount of water that was in the fuel pump most certainly did the damage.
So off tomorrow to order a new one. Hope it doesn't hurt too much.

This does not make a lot of sense that you cannot idle but it runs fine at higher RPM.
Have you considered moving the primary filter back to the original position and just see how that works. I would not be suprised if you have a minor air leak.

After talking with the mechanic,He explained that at higher RPM the fuel pump is working hard evough to supply plenty of fuel, with the extra returning to the tank.
At low RPM it is not able to supply enough and the engine is starved of fuel.
$162.00+ tax for a new pump.The part that hurts is the two week wait for the darn thing.
