You are probably o.k. Capt. Jon! But......

I think you are o.k. I am guessing that water got into the cylinder/s. But not enough water got in to bend a rod. If the engine still starts up now, it is o.k...Give it a try. If it is hard to start or will not start, you could have bent a rod. In other words, if water fills the cylinder, water does not compress like air does. So, as a result, you bend the rod. After a rod is bent, you get very poor compression. If you have poor compression, your engine will not start or will have a lot of trouble starting. So, if you go to start your engine, and you find it starts quickly as it always did, you are fine! Your Pal, "The Skipper" Eric Stanson from Ohio..Hunter 27

Don't worry about it.

Capt. Jon: I would not worry about it. These engine are pretty durable. Just keep an eye on it and see how thing go. I have run my engine without water a couple of times. I can usually hear the difference in the exhaust noise. There is a sort of hollow sound.

ran without water

I tend to agree with the other post that you most likely did not damage anything.I think what you are calling smoke was steam and you caught it before any damage was done, however you might want to check/replace the sea water impeller as a precaution.
