I did something stupid this weekend and ceased my outboard motor. It was a 9.9 hp Chrysler 2 stroke. My question is: What size engine are most Cat 22 using? Could I use a 4.5 hp outboard that is lying in my garage instead or am I asking for trouble. I only sail on inland lakes (idaho) and never on salt water. thanks Seahorse.

Lots of people use the smaller motors, I use a 5 hp four stroke and do use my boat in saltwater twice a year. Several folks use the 3.5 Nissan at the inland lake I where I sail. They have no problems whatsoever and honestly the C22 sails much better with the small 3.5 - 4 hp engines. I'm surprised some of the racers haven't been after you to sell them the motor.. You'll be fine with the 4.5. You'll also sail faster. :)

small works

I use a 3.5 hp Nissan 2 stroke, short shaft. It works fine in all the conditions I have encountered (ie strong head winds). I know the long shaft would be better but the small Nissan was available when my 6 hp Johnson went bellylight. up. Never got around to fixing the Johnson because the 3.5 worked so well and it is very light weight.
