I just recently purchased a 1973 22' O'Day sail boat. I am purchasing a new outboard motor for this boat. I am leaning towards an 8HP 4 stroke Honda. Is this the correct size motor for this boat? Will the transom support this motor? Any other suggestions? Thank you for any help.

Outboard for "22"
I have had my "22" since 1972. The key factor here is weight...the less, the better. For many years I had a Johnson 4 HP....36 lbs. Did a good job. I currently have an Evirude 6 HP (2 Stroke)..56 lbs. This engine seems about ideal. You will need a "long" shaft. I understand we all like the features of the 4 strokes. However, one must remember that it is a sailboat (not a power boat!)....You will use the motor less....The lighter weight of the 2 stroke, to my mind, make it a better choice than the heavier 4 stroke. It should be fine, you might also look for a used one (either 2 or 4 stroke). Seems like there is always someone at every marina that has an extra one for sale. If you're not sold on the 4 stroke, the 2 will be fine and mixing a little gas/oil is no big deal. 8 HP is plenty. I agree with the need for a long shaft.

I have a 2 stroke Mercury 8 HP on my O'day 23. I reach hull speed well before full throttle, so you will have plenty of power as well. Even a 6 HP would likely be more than enough. If you are buying a 4 stroke remember that in addition to the strength of the transom you need to consider the strength of the motor bracket. Many brackets are designed for a maximum weight of about 80 pounds, and the Honda 8 HP 4 stroke long shaft weighs in at 98 pounds.
