Engine size questions oday 25

Nice looking job. What mount model # did you use?

I used the longer Garelick 4 cycle mount.
71091: H.P. Rating: Over 7 1/2 to 25. Motor Weight Not to Exceed: 175 lbs. Vertical Travel*: 15 1/2" (39cm) Mtg. Pad: Poly Mounting Board Dimensions W x H x T: 11 1/2" x 12" x 2" (29x30x5cm)

There is an amazing amount of stress and leverage on the transom with the wedge and heavy motor so make sure you reinforce it significantly if you go this route. I noticed a lot of flex in the transom with just a 1/4 re-reinforcement so I think I doubled it to two sheets of 1/4 epoxied. It isn't fun to work under there with epoxy & glass.

SPK, thanks for the bracket link, I was on the site this morning but missed that bracket. I think because I'm on the bay, I'm always thinking SS or nothing. Now I know that SS and aluminum do not play well together, but I'll figure that out when I get to it. I have the ss for 2/stroke mount. The one in your photo is perfect. kent

I have several questions about what engine size to buy for our boat, both horsepower, length and weight.
Horse power: We have a oday 25 and live and sail on the Chesapeake Bay, so yes currents, tides & swells. From previous posts on this site it sounds like for my conditions a 9.9 would be best, that's what we have now. Having just said that, the engine place up the road is getting rid of their Hondas and they have a new 8hp 4 stoke power thrust (2001 never used) for $999 with 5 year warranty. However a good sale is not anything if it's the wrong engine. Thoughts?
Length: I currently have an Evinrude and according to how I've been taught to measure for shaft length, mine is measuring 22". The same engine place has yamaha's both 20" and 25". What is the ideal length for an oday 25. I would not want anything shorter than what I currently have as it does pop in and out with swells. At the same time I can't pull it all the way out of the water once underway, the top of the prop is still underwater which is not really an issue as we're not racers.
Weight: I know most are going to say stay with a 2 stroke, but I've had my share of bad luck with used engines and have paid more in service than what a new engine would cost for two different engine now, and we're new-bees so there's the confidence issue with new vs used. The Yamaha 9.9 that I'm looking at is right at 100 lbs, too much?

My 2 cents…

I replaced my old Honda 100, with a new Mercury 8 hp. electric start 25 inch shaft, and put it on what I believe is the factory outboard mount. I find it to more than enough motor. I usually have four or five people aboard, and a 23 gallon water tank full. Plus lots of beer, ice, soda for the booze etc.. It has pushed me into at least 30 mph winds with no problem. I am on a lake, so I cannot judge how it would do against swells and tides. I never need more than a little less than half throttle, and it pushes it about 6 knots or so. Very fuel efficient, and the electric start is awesome, especially when it is cold. The motor weighs about 94 lbs. I think the old Honda was at least as heavy. the Honda you are looking at sounds like a great deal. My Mercury cost me $2300.00 at Bass Pro Shop.

Hello Ward, just one last question, do you know the footprint size of your backing boards, looks something like 10x18" in that neighborhood.
I'm getting the same engine you have without the tilt control. If we were racers maybe yes but we're not. I'm also getting the mount you suggested, mine is the smaller ss for two strokes. thanks for your help

getting in a little late on this discussion but you may be interested in my set up.
Like Ward, I have a Yamaha 9.9....actually it is an exact copy of one from China (Parsun), sold by Coleman, this motor was with the boat when I got it.
After struggling with it on the original little 2 stroke mount the first year, I had to winch it up with a small chain block!, I fitted a new 15 1/2" gerelick 71091 and have found it very satisfactory. The motor weighs 116 lbs (electric start and remote controls).
I can lower the motor with a one handed push down and raise it one handed almost effortlessly.
I had to make a new FG tapered block to mount on the transom as it has a lot of reverse angle, probably more than the OD 25.
Overall, for my OD 23 boat I think It is too big a motor but maybe good for the 25.
If I had to start from scratch I would go for the smallest electric start motor, probably the 9.8 Tohatsu, smaller and lighter, and the smaller Gerelick 71090.....this would be better for my 23. My set up seems very big and heavy on the back but works good.
For my backing I have cut 3/4" plywood large pieces that go across the bolts with very large ss washers with smaller ones on top under the nuts. The bolts are long ss carriage bolts (original).
The 9.8 is the largest hp motor of the smaller frame series, the 9.9 is the smallest hp of the larger framed motors that go to 15hp, thats why it is heavy.
