I am considering purchasing a new Beneteau 46. I'm trying to decide if I should order the larger 76 hp engine instead of the standard 55hp. How much motoring speed improvement is there with the larger engine when motoring up wind at around ~2600 rpm ?

Any other advantages/disadvantages of having the larger 76 hp engine?

Thanks for your input.

Keystone,

We just bought a 43 and for what its worth the standard engine moves the boat just fine. We're in San Francisco and trialed the boat coming off of a negative tide surge /25 knt day blustery day and had no issues with making great headway. Motoring speed probably depends more upon the conditions you plan to use it than anything else and if you feel you need the additional power for harsher conditions or a heavier load for the same speed.

46 engine size

I own a 2008 46 with the upgraded 76 yanmar. This engine will move the boat nicely at 7-8knots ,depending on current, at 2700 rpm. It burns little fuel. I go to ensenada often, sail part way motor the rest. Gauage doesnt move.oh yes the guage does work. all the best
