Engine shut off cable

I have a 1983 Hunter 27 and the engine cut off cable is frozen. I have sprayed WD 40 on the cable, traced the cable and cannot find any kinks or obstructions and there is plenty of slack in the cable. The previous owner of the boat has sealed the plastic panel with 5200 and removing it without breaking it is going to be difficult, not impossible. Before I go to that trouble has anyone had this problem before? How did you repair? I don't see any type of locking system on the cable that would prevent it from being pulled out when you want to kill the engine. I am afraid to pull too hard on the cable because I can see the plastic panel with the tach and alarms beginning to bow. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Have you loosened the cable at the engine to see if it is the cable itself or if it is the linkage on the engine that is sticking?

No, not yet. When I felt around the engine it felt as though there was plenty of slack. Thanks will check this out tomorrow.

After many years of using WD40 for everything, a wise old car mechanic told me this. The WD in WD40 stands for Water Displacing, WD40 is designed to displace water. It was not designed as a penetrating oil. PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench, etc. are what you want to use to loosen fasteners. Last car repair I did, I tried PB on one manifold bolt, WD40 on the other. I was suprised how much easier the PB bolt was.

Terry is right, check the engine end first.

Yuck :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: 5200

Once those cables get corroded and frozen they are junk. The good news is that Yanmar sells replacement cables and they relatively inexpensive. Yanmar offers two different lengths and I believe the shorter one will serve for the h27. If in doubt remove the cable and measure it. You can always kill the engine manually by moving the lever by hand until you get the replacement. If the panel is cracked Yanmar has also the panel template available and again it is inexpensive. You can transfer your gauges and switches to the new one. Yanmar has two panels available for the 1GM and that is one for those with a tachometer and the other without. Now Yanmar has a strict dealers policy so you need to go online and find out who your nearest authorized dealer is and then contact them to place the orders. What they may not have in stock they can usually get from the warehouse in a couple of days. Believe me when I say that replacing that cable feels just as good as taking care of a toothache.

I went to the boat today and removed the cable. There is plenty of length and the cable appears to move freely. Appears the cable is in a 4-6" sleeve and the crimped in may have come out of the sleeve. I plan to order a replacement to get rid of the headache.
