81 H30, I need to replace the engine shut down cable. The old one is frozen. This looks like some kind of custom job. Any ideas? Is it a Hunter factory or Yanmar part? The cable and button are a one piece deal. Hawaii Dan

Put mine down below

Dan: Our cable was on the engine control when we bought the boat. The cable was toooo long as far as I was concerned. I decided that it was also a slight deterent to someone trying to steal the boat if I placed it down below. When we are in any foreign ports (not our home harbor) I pull it out and lock up the boat. As you know the yanmar does not even need a key to start it, a screw driver works just as well. So this killed two birds with one stone.

Cable

A round knobbed cable with turn to lock is standard Yanmar equipment. Your cable might be morse or Teleflex. BNoth available from West Marine, or just about anyone else for that matter. You might try soaking the cable in a solvent like paint thinner to free it up

easy job

I did mine on my 27 a year or so ago and was amazed at how easy it was. I got the cable from Torreson, specific to the Yanmar you have (I assume it is a 2GM). Installed it in less than 30 min. I had access to the underside of the plunger fom underneath through the starboard lazerette. Good luck.

Any will do

Any cable will do. Mortorcycle cable, Speedometer cable, Manual choke conversion Kit (Strauss). As long as it has the desireable hardware on it or the hardware can be attatched.

thanks for the tips

Thanks for the tips! Dan by the way I finally figured out why my engine wouldn't run below 1100 rpms... My ^&*(%#! air filter was so worn out it didn't supply enough resistance(i guess the opposite of back presure) at low rpms so it just stalled. I replaced the old filter with a new one and it runs perfect. as my daughter sez, da dad

Relocating the engine shut down cable

I too, had this problem, what I did, was to remove the cable assy, coil it up and tie it, place it in a plastic bucket and pour marvel mystery oil on it, when the inner section of the cable assy, became unfrozen, I took it apart, pollished it with 400 emery cloth, packed it with oil and re assembled it, then I relocated the "T" handle by my battery switch, where the weather could not get to it, it's been working for 10 years.

. . . has a tech bulletin on Yanmar stop cables posted on their website. You can also purchase a new one from them on-line. Or you can just enjoy their website.
