Misery likes company. My dentist advised me to do the work, as he is tired of replacing my fillings after being under iron jenny for a few hours. I have an 8hp yanmar. I am looking for anyone that has done this work in the past. Actually I intend to replace the motor mounts rebuild the engine and do something with the prop. My goal is to have some power when faced with winds and current against me. Presently top speed in this situation is aprox 2.5 to 3 knots. I will keep this updated with my progress

Recommendation!

Bill: If you are going through all of this bother, you should look around for a 1GM with fresh water cooling. At least you will be able to get parts for it. I would think you should be able to find a good used one which would save you the cost of the rebuild.

Second hand? Were, Steve?

Actually I am looking for a 2GM, Steve, but the point I try to make is how difficult is to get one of those Yanmars second hand. I was unable to pinpoint any place that sell second hand Yanmars. Do you know of some? Aldo alozano@monmouth.com

2GM

Try Old Port Marine in CT ( I think Saybrook ) for a used Yanmar. I think all 1GM are raw water cooled unless converted by the owner.

I REBUILT MY SB8 FOR MY 1979 HUNTER 27 IN THE WINTER OF 2000.IT WORKS GREAT AND HAD NO TROUBLE GETTING PARTS BUT IT IS STILL DOES NOT HAVE THE POWER THE BOAT NEEDS.MY FEELING YOU SHOULD PUT IN A MORE POWER. I READ AND I DO NOT KNOW IF IT IS TRUE THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE 2 HORSEPOWER FOR EACH 1000 POUNDS OF DISPLACEMENT.

Beta Marine/ Kubota 20 hp

Why stay with 8/8.5 hp? I have a re-built 2GM fresh water cooled Yanmar 13 hp that is good to go for the moment. Still, I could use some more power for peace of mind crossing the inlets here to and from the Atlantic.Being active duty Navy, I anticipate being gone for a while, i.e., money in the bank. The f/w cooled diesels from Beta Marine have my eye and money to the tune of $6,800-7,200 everything included, switch-out, instil, etc. I will keep my 27 until I am ready for retirement and blue water capabilities. Why not restore her to even better standards then when she was brand new? So for me , owning this boat another 10-12 years makes sense to replace the engine with added horsepower. Good luck in your search, s/v "LOTUS"
