Engine Seastrainers...suggestions?

I took a look at the seastrainer on my boat, and after some research I believe it is this one: http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=44209F

It is quite encrusted with green corrosion. The clear plastic cylinder is split in 3 places. It appears that the corrosion is just a surface coating and i could clean it up pretty easy.

should I just buy a replacement top & gasket and use it? or should i replace it? I'm not going to spend $300 on a new one. I see other types for a lot cheaper. If i need to replace, could I go with something cheaper like one of the all plastic units? they seem to have better baskets anyway. mine just has a disc inside.

oh, maybe you have to consider flow rate or something? I have a 44hp yanmar 4jhe. I dont know if the link i posted is the actual size of the one I have onboard, but its that type of strainer.

Thats probably $600! im a poor sailor. barely have a boat. Is there a cheaper alternative? whats wrong with the plastic versions? yeah, they arent all nice and bronze, but heck, dont they work?

The Perko 493 is a great sea strainer. Yours does not look like it will hold much before it plugs.

It's not $600.00 clams but worth every penny of $163.00..

Replacement Sea Strainer

I installed a Perko (it is plastic) sea stainer a few years ago. Would recommend you just buy a new stainer of sufficient size and go on. These things are not complicated - input/strainer/output - not much to them. Or much that can go wrong. But watch the mesh size as the one I first put in had a small mesh which I thought would be good in staining out foreign matter. We had an algae bloom that summer and the small mesh clogged up and over heated the engine. After installing a larger mesh screen the problem has not reoccurred. In this case straining out all material was not the best solution.

Yeah, if you get the one sized for a 400 HP diesel it would be... you don't need one that big... and as Maine Sail said, it's less than $200 ($159.95 at the link I posted), and it is far easier to maintain than what you've got and far more functional.

ok, thats more reasonable. It does look like it would do a better job than the little screen disc thats in mine.

Easy for US to spend your $$. If it's been working for however long you've had your boat, then size shouldn't be an issue. Why not see if you CAN just get a replacement plastic?

I was cleaning the plastic basket from my strainer with the hose & shot it right out of my hands and off the dock. Lesson learned - those things sink like stones! Anyway, at least for my sea water strainer for a Yanmar 3YM30 on a Beneteau 343, I could not just order a replacement basket. They must be purchased as a unit.
