I have a few questions for the folks that know much more about engines that I do... 1. I was trying to change out the raw water impeller and I took it off the engine block, but the screws that held the pump cover on seems locked onto the pump pretty well. As I tried to get them off, it seemed that they wanted to strip the head before wanting to loosen. I sprayed them with WD-40 to no avail. Is there a way to get them off - should I try using my cordless drill with more torque and just hope for the best. If I strip the heads, how can I get the screws off without having to replace the pump? 2. If there are small areas of rust on the engine, should I hit them with a wire brush and sand and paint over? Is there a special engine paint and if so, where can you get it? Do some people just leave it - I would rather have everything looking ship-shape though. Thanks for any suggestions.

A little Coke or pepsi
is supposed to work for loosening rusted bolts. Soft drinks are toxic and hazardous though so be careful and make sure to get a permit. You could also heat them a little with a torch. Don't overdo it and burn your boat.

Don't use a drill,try putting heavy screw driver on them and hitting with hammar or vise grips if you strip the heads. I coat my pump with anti corrosion spray every year when I take it apart and check impeller,when you do get the screws out try to replace with stainless screws. nick

allen heads
I replaced the screws on my water pump with stainless allen heads. Get the largest allen size you can and use good allen keys that fit tight. Ace Hardware.

...I removed as many bolts on the engine as I could get at(one at a time) and coated them in copper anti seize compound (except head bolts). Did the same with the outboard engine. To this day, everything comes apart so easily. Using Vise-Grips on the small screws of the water pump cover could well shear them off. Heat can be used very judicously. Overheating the pump can destroy the seals. But you may be reduced to buy a new pump if all else fails.
