I found that the wire of the in-line vent fan in a 2 or 3" hose was cut by the previous owner. My question is: What turns this fan on/off since I cannot find any related switch. He must have cut it for a reason...Could it be that it always runs when the engine is running? Do I really need this fan on my Beneteau 381? On a second thought... could this be an air intake and not exhaust fan? I looks like a factory install. Thanks.

It's runs when the engine does. You want to get the heat out of the engine room, especially on a long run.

Power to the fan comes from the "ignition" switch. The fan is supposed to run when the key is turned on, even if the motor hasn't been started yet.

The fan is part of a ventilation system designed to draw fresh air into the engine compartment and expel the surrounding air heated by the motor.

The fan is kinda noisey and the PO likely cut the wire to get some peace `n quiet.
