Good morning

I am buying my first sailboat, a Hunter 456. I had the engines inspected and the oils analyzed. Would you please take a minute and look it over. This is all new to me.

Also the engine is listed as a 75 hp Yanmar but when I looked up what 50 kw was, it is 67 hp. Why the difference?

There are 2 power ratings, continuous and maximum. The continuous power rating for the 4JH3TE is 50.7 kw or 69 hp, the maximum power rating is 55.2 kw or 75 hp.

Generally, diesels like to be run at 80-90% of their max output, 50 kw is about 90% of the the max output. Fuel efficiency is usually best around 80%.

I did notice your Kohler Genset check out. I have the same Genset.

The check list did NOT include the galvanic corrosion protective, pencil Zinc.

It should be changed every 500 hours or once a year.
You might call back the reviewer, about that.

As we speak my Fischer Panda generator with a Kuboda diesel has had the head removed as it had failed. Anti freeze was getting into the combustion chambers and the engine would not start.
It is possible both of the engines tested are in need of a similar repair. I think to make the testing useful, the oil should be changed at least once and then the engines run. Another oil sample analyzed to find out if the coolant and water are still present. I think that would answer whether the antifreeze and water were added by mistake, which I doubt.
I would also want to check the inside of the exhaust elbows, not just the outside.

Thing about testing the oils less the elbow part. I will ask him.
