I am considering replacing the Universal M3-20 diesel engine in my 1991 Catalina 28 (not a 28 MkII) because of a very expensive repair it will need. Any suggestions on Universal dealers or experiences in having an engine replaced? Buying another boat is not an option for me.

engine

I put a new Yanmar 18 HP in an O'Day 28 that previously had a Universal 5411 (11HP) about seven years ago. No regrets, it worked out great. It cost me about $6000 plus a little but I also had to get a new prop and replaced the exhaust system too. Very happy with the results but I did upsize to the next boat a couple of years later, you know, 2 footitis or actually 5 footitis.
I had to modify the engine mount just a little bit by cutting a small piece of it out. I used a chain fall to get the old engine out and lower the new one in. Otherwise, the new engine fit right in with very few problems.
Best of luck,
Chuck

Im familiar with Hansen Marine Their good people In fact one of their people
lives around the corner from me. Unfortunately a new replacement diesel for
your boat is most likely gonna cost a lot more than $6000. I havent checked lately but its probably closer to 10000. And dont forget about freight and the exhaust prop and shaft expense unless you can use the old stuff This cost estimate assumes your installing it yourself. Otherwise your looking at another
$4000 for installation.

Good Luck
