Has anybody replaced their 1GM with a Westerbeke 12C Two or with a Yanmar 2YM15 ?
If so, please give an idea of problems to expect and costs.

1GM10 and Campbell Sailor Prop

We upgraded to a 1GM10 and Campbell Sailor Prop from the SB8 and original prop on our '77 h27. That combination easily cruises at 5.5 knots, and will take us to hull speed on flat water.

We met a member of the Lake Erie Hunter club a few years ago who had upgraded to a 2 cylinder, 15 HP Yanmar on his h27. He was happy with the result, and there was no problem getting the engine in. But he admitted it was more power than he ever used.

Craig:

My first question is why are you thinking about swaping out engines? Is your old one shot?

I am guessing that you are looking at about $5k-6k for the engine. Then you possiblyh need other parts like the shaft, prop, motor mounts etc. Then you are looking at 40-80 hrs of labor. The economics just don't add up unless there is no other option.

You may want to consider finding a used/rebuilt 1GM and a good prop if you are just looking for more speed under power. If you still have a good engine than the right prop can/will make all the difference as David mentioned.

Current engine is frozen up (gave boat to son for couple of years and they neglected it). Need extra power and speed to feel safe in an area frequented by big tankers (vicinity of Houston Ship Channel). Will also change to a mechanical/dry shaft seal.

Understood

As I said, the 2 cylinder Yanmar will fit fine. I recommend you call around the major engine shops across the country. I was looking for a rebuilt 1GM10, and Torreson Marine had a new one that only had 50 hours on it! I got it for $2,000 versus more thatn twice that for a new one. The labor to install it cost me more!

Good luck!

Hey Craig, I have a 1984 h27 and replaced original Westerbeke ten2 with a Yanmar 2YM15 about 4 years ago. Did mine because trans on Westerbeke was dead and the economics of spending $1500 on 24 year old engine (that was also abused) did not make sense. Several points to make:
1. New engine fits but had to fabricate one new stringer since engine mnts are further appart on port side.
2. Take great care in locating new stringer, had to move mine to accomplish alignment.
3. I also replaced prop shaft hose while engine was out. I did not do anything with propshaft or flax packing - wish I had had shaft trued and replaced bearing since need to now.
4. Job of replacing is acually really easy. I did mine while boat was in water - still easy.
5. New enging is very powerful for a 27. I cruise at 6+mph at 2800 rpm and consistantly get 15+ mpg. I usually keep up with larger boats without pushing.

In 4 years, I already have 1700 hours on new engine - it has been perfectly reliable.

Has anyone considered electric motor for a repower?

Just to take it a bit further, a guy at the Annapolis show was selling Elco electric motors and a possible repower. The economics seemed to be comparable for my 1980 H27 depending on how much reserve you wanted to build in and there seemed to be some advantages as well in terms of quiet running, no direct fuel cost, no diesel smell and reduced maintenance. ANyone gone this route?
