removehtml]The Yanmar 2gm20F on my 29.5 has a bent valve. The replacement requires removal from the boat. I am considering replacement of the engine with a Beta Marine 20hp. Any thoughts?Error: Error: expected [/URL], but found [/removehtml] instead[/removehtml]

Craig, are you sure about the need to pull . . .

the engine for a bent valve? I would think you could pull the head and do any valve work that needs doing. Now if there is damage other than the valves (like pistons) then I can see it. Think about pulling the head and inspect the tops of the pistons and if nothing looks bad, dented , holed then you could get the head redone and spend a whole lot less than the $$$$ for a new engine.

Why are you considering replacement?

When all the engine may need is a top job. Was the engine worn or does it have any other damage? Are looking for reliability? A well rebuilt engine can be just as reliable as a new one. Just think you may be able to spend your hard earned money for some nice electronics or other upgrades.

Bent Valve, new engine?

Craig: I would have to agree with the others. You surely don't need a new engine if you have a bent valve. Even if you have a damaged piston. I don't think you are getting a "better" engine with a Beta, just less expensive. There are a lot of costs involved in swapping engines, even if it is the same mfg. How do you think this happened? I was told by a very reliable Yanmar mechanic that Yanmar bench tests these engines at over 4000 rpms, so over-reving is probably not the cause!

Yanmar vs Beta

I'm a Yanmar fan so you will have to give more than a few good reasons to replace a fixable Yanmar with a New Beta. Consider the resale value and all the hassle for the change-over. Would you buy a Chevy with a Ford engine? I have heard that the Chevy 350-V8 with a Hydromatic transmission is an excellent replacement for the old problematic XJ-7 Jaguar but you will have to ask a gearhead like Fred about that! But Yanmars are not typically problematic. Even a pull and rebuild would be easier than a re-FIT for the Beta wouldn't it?

second opinion

I would get a second opinion. Pulling the engine for a bent valve sounds strange to me. I wouldn't even think about replacement. Yanmar should be good for 10,000+ hours before rebuild.

Thanks for the input

Thanks for all the input. I will relook the problem and talk to my mechanic. As to why it happened, I think it was due to water in the fuel, a hard lesson which can't be overemphasized to new sailors (in my opinion now).

Replace Engine or Fix?

Last winter, I authorized my mechanic to remove the head of my 2GM20 to determine the cause of vibration, low power, smoking, etc. This required the removal of the head, not the entire engine, from the boat. The work was done on his bench in the shop. One cylinder was all coked up and the valves not sealing. The fix required new valves, gasket, and replacement of the temp. switch found to be not operating. Cause - Most likely many hours of running at "No Wake" speeds to and from the lake with not enough periods of running at cruising speed for hours at a time. Labor was $839, Parts $259 - Tot. $1,098. This boat and engine are 27 years old an have logged 98,000+ nm. Compare to the cost of removal and a new engine!
