Replace Engine or Fix?
Last winter, I authorized my mechanic to remove the head of my 2GM20 to determine the cause of vibration, low power, smoking, etc. This required the removal of the head, not the entire engine, from the boat. The work was done on his bench in the shop. One cylinder was all coked up and the valves not sealing. The fix required new valves, gasket, and replacement of the temp. switch found to be not operating. Cause - Most likely many hours of running at "No Wake" speeds to and from the lake with not enough periods of running at cruising speed for hours at a time.Labor was $839, Parts $259 - Tot. $1,098.This boat and engine are 27 years old an have logged 98,000+ nm. Compare to the cost of removal and a new engine!
