Engine Ops Check

Hey,
Any ideas for ops checking the engine before it goes in the water? The only thing I can think is to hook up a hose to the raw water intake, with another out the exhaust to a barrel and fire it up. Is it possible to run the engine with no water for 30 seconds? Or do I need to make sure there is some water flowing?

Thanks,
Jack

Hi - If the engine is to be run out of the water for a short period, first take out the impellor from the water pump, 30 secs or so should be OK.

If you have an engine with indirect cooling you might be able to run a little longer.

I have run the engine with the boat on the hard by doing as you say with a
hose.

Very straightforward.

I did it to run antifreeze through the engine & exhaust.

I also did the same when the boat was in the water - during the very cold
weather back in January/February - again to run antifreeze through the
system.

Only negative maybe is that impellor is spinning dry at first but you
could prime the system by connecting the input pipe directly to the water
pump and raising the bucket/barrel so that there is a "head" of coolant...

A diesel mechanic told me any impeller worth its salt will run dry for 30 seconds or a minute or more, no harm done.

Might be a good time to inspect/ replace the impeller if it has been in there for awhile.

. . and, whatever you do, don't hook up a pressurized water hose to
the intake! Trevor (V2915)

But the small amount of pressure due to siphoning from a bucket/barrel
with a head of say 0.5 metre over the level of the pump is not a problem
surely?

Yes, that should be fine. Another concern when operating the Combi out
of the water for any extended period is to lubricate the (water
lubricated) stern gland as there is no "neutral." I just run a hose on
it. Trev (V2915)

H.:
If you have a variable pitch prop (where the prop turns all the time), watch the stern bearing- running too long isn't too good for the (dry) bearing.

Many thanks to one and all for the suggestions. A couple of them made me laugh! I'll pull the impeller. I need to take a look at it anyway. I plan on running it just long enough to make sure it starts. With all of the electrical and fule work we did this year, I just want to make sure it runs before it goes in the water.

Thanks again everyone!

Jack
