Engine Oil/ Yanmar 3YM30

Here is a question for all you smart folks out there...

The previous owner took excellent maintenance notes and logs. I have continued to do so, and today went to do my annual oil change. I have been using, (as was the P.O) Shell Rotella 15-40. The yard that does the initial commissioning I understand uses the same oil.

Attached, look at the Yanmar book, and the 3rd bullet point. "NEVER.... CH-4"

Now, look at the back label of the Shell Oil Bottle...

What say all of you?

Thanks

You scared me, since I use Rotella in my 3YM30. But here's a good explanation of what the classifications mean:

So I presume the manual means not to use an oil that's *only* certified to the CG-4 or CH-4 level. Seems like the higher grades provide the extra qualities that the engine requires.

Look for the date of printing of the manual. There have been great improvements in oils in recent years and certain categories are dropped or included in higher grades. It is quite common to look at the boat manuals and find the recommended oil is not even available at this time. The Shell Rotella 15W40 exceeds your engine's requirements.
