What type of oil should I use for my 1983 Yanmar 3GMF engine. I live in South Louisiana, and sail in winter and summer. Thanks Very Much

use straight weight oil. No multi viscositys. 30 wt oil will be good for both summer and winter in Lou.

Rated CD or Higher, 30W Single Viscosity

The rating of the oil must be Cx (formulated for diesels) for the 3GM. That is CD, or higher - where the second character is D,E... And , as the other post states, a single viscosity of 30. WM stocks the 30W CD. If you can find it at an automotive store, then you are better off.

Use oil....

made for diesel engines. Go to WalMart (or ?) and look for 5-30 Diesel oil. It's made with additives specific for Diesel's. It doesn't cost any more.

Terry, did you find it at Costco yet?

Mine has Delo in six-one gallon cases. $34.00. I've got a lifetime supply now. :)

diesel oils

I would like to take exception to the post that says all diesels use straight weight oil,I think you will find that Yanmar now recommends to use a multi-viscosity oil in there newer engines. As far as the older yanmars, use the straight weight oil as per the owners manual. yanmar markets it own oil and I don't see how you can go wrong using it,or a major oil producers that meet the "CD" rating should be O.K.

Pete, I Think You're Correct

The newer Yanmars (I don't know since when) now use a multi-viscosity oil. But the one in question (1983) must definitely require a straight 30W according to my manual.

Try Mobil One

I've been using Mobil One since after engine 'break-in'. It has all the lubricating qualities and fuel saving aswell. Now going on 12 years, engine runs like new and never burns a drop. After removing the valve cover for valve adjustment, looks like it just left the factory.

One season....

...which amounts to about 100 hours per season. Why? What difference does it make?

Just wondering,

That oil is 'super long life'. In a car it's good for 25,000 mile before changing.

Most oils...

...will last a very long time before they ever need changing. The problem is that the filtering systems are antiquated and simply can't keep the oil clean enough. Also, oil becomes acid over time and needs to be neutralized. Since this just never gets done it's easier just to change it.
