Alright, this might be a dumb question, but this is the first time ever working on a diesel engine. Is the 10w40 oil used, just like anyother 10w40? Can I just pick some up at an auto store? What about the oil filter? Same thing?

Call it superstition if you like, but I (like most sailors that have diesels), swear by Rotella 15w40 engine oil for diesels....No matter what size small diesel. And, yes, I buy it at most any Auto Parts store. Actually, I spend a "little time" searching for the cheapest price and then go out and buy it.

Good luck and Happy Sailing

Rotella T is formulated for diesels and is a better oil than the stuff you use in your car. One reason it's better is one of it' additives. Zinc. Zinc is an excellent additive, but cannot be used in your car oil because it will coat the catalytic converter, rendering it useless.

You're not getting the complete story on oil for your diesel. Oil is rated as either "C" or "S" - which I think stands for "compression" or "spark". "C" rated oil is for diesel (compression) engines, "S" is for gasoline engines.

The Rotella might be diesel ("C") specific, but check to make sure. Many/most boat diesels are looking for 15W30, but it's always best to check your manuals, or the engine manufacturers website. And don't forget that there is wealth of knowledge on the Catalina 36 association website ( http://catalina36.org/ ), and some other models share the M35 engines (C34's and C350's) http://catalina350.net/ http://www.c34.org/

Good Luck!
