Has anyone actually used an diesel engine oil analysis to check the condition of an diesel engine in a boat before purchasing? If so where/what company did you use. I can find a lot of info on what the test(s) can tell about the engine but no place that actually does the test. I mentioned it to one of the marina repair guys - yes they heard about it but don't do it.

Engine oil analysis:

I bought a sampler kit from West Marine a few years ago with a mailer to a lab attached. Lost it before I used it so I can not comment on the results. They may still sell these kits, I don't know.

What do you mean they said "don't do it" ?

Are you saying they have heard about it, but don't bother with testing it and it is a waste of money?

Fluids Analysis Labs

My surveyor collected and submitted my pre-purchase oil analysis. He recommends that I send in another analysis every couple of years. The company he uses keeps the records in their computer by HIN, so they can pull up previous reports to allow you to compare to current results. The initial report will serve as the future baseline to measure against. The name on the report is: Fluids Analysis Laboratory 1245 Bridgestone Blvd. LaVergne, TN 37086 615.256.2424 main 615.259.5811 fluids analyst www.thompsonmachinery.com Their website has a good discussion of the service. http://www.thompsonmachinery.com/sos_analysis.php

Oil analysis...an oppinion

There is much hurah about engine oil analysis. It can be beneficial or harmfull depending on the use. When oil analysis is used regularly from the first few hours it is verry helpful. You can trend whats going on in the engine and make a plan well ahead of time. When oil analysis is used as a spot check it's basicly worthless. You'll learn facts that will scare the pants off of the average person. Most noteably, there metal in the oil...this happens normaly all engines wear and loose alittle metal to the oil. If you want to know whats going on without a history. Cut the oil filter open and inspect the membrane. If you see metal it's bad. I do not do oil analysis in favor of filter inspections. Pat - your opinion

Pat, What are your thoughts about my surveyor's recommendation to use the initial analysis as a baseline and conduct one every couple of years to watch for trends? Sherry

the first one

Since I've known and trusted my surveyor for years, I had him interpret the first one for me. He explained that since the first one was submitted 'blind' (PO couldn't tell us what kind of oil he used or when he last changed it), we would not put too much emphasis on the results. So he kept me from panicking over the initial results. I'll follow his recommendation for future sampling and get him to help me interpret those results, too. Thanks for your advice.

I have been doing analysis for several years on cars. This site is the most helpful you will find. I recomend you use Dyson Analysis. You will find his link under the sponsors of the site. He solved some serious issues with a new Miata for me. He knows his stuff with cars and may be able to offer help on boats. If you email him he will respond quickly. The site is bobistheoilguy.com
