I have a yanmar 2gm20f which has a push button on the control panel to turn off the engine. Recently pushing this button has no effect and the engine continues to run. Any suggestions on what may be the cause and how to fix it. Thanks

Zman:

The original 2gm had a cable on the key panel that allowed you to pull it the cut fuel to the engine. Quite often these cables would corrode and they were near impossible to pull to shut off the fuel.

My guess is that the P.O. of your vessel put a solenoid on the engine rather than replacing the cable. Take a look at your engine (I think it would be on the starboard side of the motor). It may have a loose or broken connection from the key panel to the solenoid.

The button activate a solenoid to simulate a cable pull like the old diesel. Trace the 12V. May be you have turned off the ignition switch or the run position has bad contact. Diesel doesn't need 12V to run.

Mine did the same thing. The solenoid is on the port side of the 4JH4E. Test for voltage at the solenoid when the button is pressed. If so, it's bad. IF not, the wiring or switch (stop button) is bad

I had to replace my solenoid but it's an easy job.

On our 2GM20F Diesel engine the push button on the pannel is just for starting AFTER the ignition switch is turned to the on position and left there. To stop ours you throttle down to idle and pull the shutoff cable (on our 1990 H-33.5 it is located just in side the companionway to the side of the stairs/engine access). Then when it stops I turn the ignition switch to off position - only after it stops.

Yanmar engines are 'shut down' by lowering the engine speed / rpm to that lower than what the engine can normally idle.
Some use a simply control cable, some use an electric solenoid ... and all allow the normal running idle position (on the control cams and cranks) to be momentarily 'depressed' below 'idle' speed.

Simple speak: your engine's 'idle speed' control needs to be readjusted, so that when you pull the cable or push the stop button the engine's rpm drops to that which will stall the engine. Your engine is probably 'idling' at too great a speed and needs to be 'lowered'.

We too have a push button to stop our Yanmar 4JH engine. The button failed to function and I had the solenoid replaced which solved the problem.
