My universal M-18 is too loud !!! I posted the same question about three weeks ago and only got one response. Just thought I'd ask again.... Does everyone else with Mid 80's C-30's have the same problem??? Hunters with Yanmars come by and I can hardly hear them....Are there any alternatives?? My one response to my first post said that they tried insulating the engine area, and that it sounded the same...... Thanks in advance (again). H.

3 things to consider (most useful to least)

1) many folks have been able to further insulate the engine compartment to a limited degree of success. I believe They sell kits for that. 2) Think of it as a Harley, a timeless classic that needs not be tamed! 3) sounds like too much motoring. Go SAILING!

Noise- Exhaust or Interior?

I have an '85 with the M25X. The sound level in the cabin is intrusive, but the exhaust note, at 25 feet, is barely noticable. You say that you can hardly hear other boats going past, which would indicate excessive exhaust noise. Is that correct?

Re Exhaust or Interior.....

It's quite loud on the interior, and loud enough when steering to be bothersome. (Well, I mean moreso than an engine usually is). It is *substantially* louder than the yanmar on a Watkins 32 I chartered earlier this year.... I don't know what an exhaust note is, so I can't really answer. Can you give me some possibilities...

# of cylinders

I've heard that the 2-cylinder diesels, like the M-18 will be louder than a 3 or more cylinder diesel, like the 25X (in later boats). Also, the diesel installation on a C30 is in the middle of the cabin, while other diesel installs on other boats are usually (buried) under the companionway. Mid-cabin does make maintenance access easy, but louder in the cabin. My '82 C30 diesel is loud also (I have the engine compartment soundproofed), but I'm also happy with its reliability.

Motor mounts

I have a '79 C30 with a little ole yanmar, but it really rattled around and made alot of noise until I replaced the motor mounts. The original rubber was completely worn away. You may want to check them out. Good luck. Jack Jolly Mon
