I have a 1985 C30 with an M25XP. Anyone have experience / recommendations with adding noise insulation to the engine compartment? Presently my engine is removed, so the timing couldn't be better if indeed it's viable.

find a lagger

Dan do have you hear of armaflex?or ridgid board fiberglass? if not check out a commercial industrial insulation supply contractor.the armaflex is mainly used in cool temp. useage but as long as theres no engine fires it will probably be alright. it's easily applied with a armaflex glue somewhat like contact cement. it comes in different thickness from 1/2" thur 2" that I know of. I have used it on my boat which is a single cylinder diesel { quite noisey I might add }and it has worked very well.if your worried about heat,,,, check out the board glass. you can also get some stick pins and washers from the supplier. quite easy the application. If you are having a tough time finding the supplier try a commercial industrial insulation company. chances they won't want to help because of the profit margin {if any}but if you know anyone in costruction carpender plumber electrican ask them if they have seen or know of a {lagger} insulator, he might help . it's too bad your not closer I could help you get the insulation and would probably help you do it. But try to find the insulation contractor SUPPLIER he has the stuff and will tell you how to apply it. O K, D. good luck Jake the lucky lagger

Or Defender sell real good insulation that takes a couple of hours to install. Engine noise reduced by 50%. Best thing I've done to my boat.

Sound Insulation Source

There are three types of product you might be interested in: sound absorbers, barriers and combinations. Depending on the amount of sound you need to eliminate and your budget a variety of products might work. We installed a soft foam absorber which helps. Check out McMaster-Carr for various sound absorbers and barriers. Many are easy to apply and vary in price. Type "sound insulation" in to search their catalog.

Question for Joe Barrett

Joe- I'm very interested in how much of the Catalina 30 engine compartment you insulated and whether you used 1" insulation for everything or had to use 1/2" on the side next to the fuel filter and hatches- space seems tight for 1". Did you install with your engine in or out? Any lesons learned from your experience that would help those of us contemplating this project? My wife promises to go sailing more if I do something about the engine noise below.

1" or 1/2" Sound Insulation?

Anyone besides Joe who has insulated the engine compartment for a Catalina 30 and can let us know whether the correct insulation is 1" or 1/2 " and whether there is enough room in the engine compartment to install the sound insulation in a 1985 Catalina 30?

not answering for Joe

although I havnt done it yet, I have been reading alot about it. go to soundown.com and they have lots of answers. they seem to recommend the greatest thickness allowed ie; 1/2 where 1 will not fit and 1 where it will. as well as other helpfull hints. this is just one of the many in the near future project I want to tackle.
