If mounts are original... they are shot. If you have not replaced them in the last 5 years or so... they are shot. If you can grab the top of the engine with one hand and easily shake the engine from side to side... they are really shot. If you are asking this question... they are probably shot. Replacement is not that hard except for realignment of the coupling and recentering the shaft. Andrea and I replaced ours last year in about two hours. Note there are two fronts and two backs not four of one type. Be careful not to mix them up. Good Luck George

I REPLACED MINE AND THEY WERE ONLY 5 YEARS OLD ON MY 35.5. ( DON'T FORGET TO INSTALL A DRIPLESS STUFFING BOX). YOU SHOULD GET SOMEONE WITH KNOWLEDGE TO HELP WOULDN'T HURT. IF THE ENGINE IS MOVING(WHEN ITS RUNNING AND PUT INTO GEER) AT THE MOUNTS MORE THAN AN INCH THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED. GOOD LUCK

Mack Boring

I talked to the guys at the Mack Boring parts counter, including a guy running the engine rebuilding class. Their take: -its obvious when they're gone. The rubber disintegrates. -engine alignment is art rather than science. On my 19 year old Hunter, they recommended letting sleeping dogs lie unless there was a problem (e.g. lots of vibration; bits of rubber around; too much play in the engine.) Of course, this was in the context of discussing a motor that only gets 20-30 hours of use per year.
