Universal 25XP Engine alarm goes off after running for five minutes, Mechanic mentioned it could be engine low oil pressure... if that is the case can someone advice, what needs to be done ? about how much it would cost to fix ?? I have replaced temp. sender and the oil sensor, But still goes off. I am not getting hull speed of 6.27 as recomended by Catalina, 3000 RPM reaches only 4.4 knots. Thank you. Carlos

You have major engine wear

I am a certified auto mechanic with over 29 years of experience, so you can trust me when I say that if you are experiencing low oil pressure it is time to rebuild your engine, or better yet, purchase a new one. Before you do either one of the aforementioned, you need to take a "mechanical" oil pressure reading on the engine to accurately determine if you do indeed have low oil pressure. You unscrew the oil pressure sending unit and screw in a mechanical gauge. Snap-On makes a beautiful guage set, but it would be impractical for you to buy one, so ask your local auto mechanic friend to come to the boat for a beer and test your oil pressure. It will only take a few minutes to perform. Then and only then will you know for sure what is going on with the engine. Sorry for the bad news :( Good Luck, Jack Beneteau 411

Engine oil pressure

Something is not right with your numbers, either the tsckometer or the speedo. I run the same U 25XP on my cat 30 and get 5.5 "hull speed" at 2200 rpm. The engine has a top rated rpm of 3200 and should not be run over 2600 at top cruise. If you are really turning 3000, you are punishing the engine and maybe getting an overheating alarm? Have you tried checking the speed with a GPS for accuracy? At 2200 I get a pronounced stern wave telling me the boat is at top speed. A rebuild should not be required on this engine with normal sailboat use and hours run unless it was abused. Good luck Ron B

I hate to be the one to ask but did you check--

your oil level? Is the oil the proper weight? How about the oil filter? I hope it's a simple fix good luck. Tom s/v GAIA

Yes, both oil & filter....

Thank you Tom, filter oil is always replace on oil changes and oil is 10-40 as recomended by Universal.
