I am considering an engine hour counter on my new/old Cat 30. Anybody out there with DIY experience backfitting a Hobbs to their instrument cluster?

Thx

Not quite sure what your question is. The standard cockpit cluster usually doesn't allow the addition of a separate 2 1/4" round gauge, since the tach had the hour meter built in. I just did a quick Google search on hobbs engine hour meters and lots of hits come up with how to install one, although not in an existing C30 cockpit panel. If it was my boat, and the tach still worked but the hour meter was stuck/busted, I'd just place it somewhere else convenient in the boat and just wire it to the ignition switch. It really doesn't need to be in the cockpit panel. In fact, I find that meter hard to read and wish it was down below somewhere easier to get to. :)

I am on travel and my boat is not where I am, but I do not believe there is an hour meter integral to the tach. Will check as soon as I am home (tomorrow). This is my new boat! Still on the learning curve, thx

R,

I grew up at the airport, so Hobbs speaks to me! :)

I was going to buy one and install it on my M18 but, alas, I cheaped out and bought whatever brand West Marine was selling at the time that was cheaper than a Hobbs. I wired it into the electric fuel pump so it's really a fuel pump hour meter, but I think that is close enough since I just use it for timing of preventative maintenance.

Probably any hour meter would serve your purpose well, but I understand the desire for a "Hobbs" meter.

Take care, DanM.

thanks to all, I am back from travel, checked out my rig yesterday and no integral engine hour meter w/tach. But, off to WM to see what their options are.

wire in series upstream or downstream of the fp?

I wired mine to the ignition switch. So that it measures when the key is turned to on which is probably less than 1% longer than the time the engine is actually running.

R,

Mine is in parallel to the fuel pump and the meter is mounted just inside the forward engine access panel.
