"used to use on farms"? They are still used by the Amish and Old Order Mennonite to run machinery, chillers and power other farm equipment. There is even a thriving parts industry for steam-powered tractors up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Sounds like a full scale model railroader's delight! Where does he do this, or is it "classified?" Got any pictures?

I think it's a Lister engine. They are well-suited to constant RPM, steady load sorts of applications like agricultural processes, power generation, and boat propulsion.

My Grandfather had one of those on a drag saw back in the 50's

We had one that powered a cement mixer when I was a kid. Only the exhaust valve had a lifter on it the intake valve had a weak spring that you held open when you cranked the flywheel. When it was spinning good you just let go of the intake valve and it was sucked open on the intake stroke and shut when the piston reached the bottom of the stroke. The flywheels pulled the crank through the compression stroke and the spark plug fired. There were grease cups on the rod and main bearings and I can't remember how the cylinder and piston were lubricated. The water jacket on the cylinder was open and we just added water when it got low.

"The engines were used for anything back in the day, from bailing hay to running water pumps to cement mixers in the twenties. Anything belt driven had one of them. The rail cars are a little different than the “hit and miss” engines, but are still one lung and crank engines. "
