Engine exhaust

My 82 Oday 34's exhaust is at the bottom of the transom. Has anybody move theirs up to keep it out of the water while motoring. I don't like the carbon line on the transom after a days motoring. I know, I'm supposed to be sailing.

I just wipe it off with my foot when going swimming, no one knows it was there ;)

Most boats have them there. Probably for a reason. I don't know what it is but I'll take a few guesses: when underway it's underwater and makes a nice burbbling sound instead of sounding like an Army tank or an air cooled outboard; keeps the exhaust gases off the entire transom instead of just at the waterline; helps to keep some of the gases from your cockpit when motoring downwind when the wind is 6 and you're doing 5; keeps the FSR dudes in stock; gives you something to do when you go swimming (or you could call Dan over since he knows what he's doing!:)); makes it easier for the exhaust water to drop into the ocean straight down, so it doesn't dribble down the transom...

Really, maybe only the last one has any chance of being in the ballpark, but it's the one that strikes me as closest.

I like burbbling brooks, closest I get to them when I'm on my boat. :):):)

PS - Just occurred to me: go take a look at how your exhaust hose connects to the thru hull. It'd be a real bear to turn it to go out the flat part of the transom. Maybe that's why. I just changed my 17 foot long exhaust hose, and neither end had any bends.

when under way There is negative air pressure from the boat moving forward (just like a pick up truck bed) So the exhaust is condensed and less likely to waft up into the cockpit and most is carried away in the water. Just my guess! lol

I guess this is not high on anybody's list of things to do. I will drink the beer and clean it myself. ;-)

I wouldn't recommend that mod.

Whilst rebuilding Karma's exhaust due to a rusted out water injection manifold I studied water exhaust systems enough to know that I didn't know enough to modify anything. Perhaps one of those exhaust extensions with the rubber flapper to prevent water intrusion would change the pattern enough to keep the transom water line clean.

Of course cleaning with beer in hand is also a good alternative. Remember one hand for yourself, one hand for the boat.

well I've seen a few boats that discharge the exhaust down in the bottom of the boat but in the area that is normally a few inches above the water line. Hunter 33, and Ericsson 32 are 2 that I know of.

I think it is viatally important to be aware of the sounds while you are either motoring or sailing, any sudden change should allow an immediate investigative response. Hearing the cooling water flow is one of the things I stay tuned in to in particular. Losing cooling water will result in a destroyed engine and may put the boat at risk so immediate response to kill the engine is a key action.

while on the subject has anyone changed out their exhaust hose? I'm preparing to rip out my exhaust system and replace it including the upgrade to 3 inch heat exchanger and new waterlock muffler. I found in replacing my bilge pump stern through hull that getting at the fitting under the swim platform for the hose clamps was next to impossible. I wanted to switch to a bronze fitting but it wouldn't fit with the angle and length so I stuck with Marelon. Very little space to work in there. Any knowledge from others will be most appreciated.

great info stu....thank you for that. are you using a vetus waterlock muffler or other type? I replaced my original custom made water injection exhaust pipe (it corroded away) with a typical cast elbow and part of the project will be to get the hose runs properly aligned and positioned. the hose from the elbow to the vetus unit is a bear to assemble given the short length and inflexibility of the hose.

When we bought our boat it came with a new length of exhaust hose and fuel hose. So far, I've replaced the exhaust from the waterlock up to a T-fitting (maybe 5 feet or so) but I haven't ventured back under the swim platform.
Not to hijack the thread, but while we're on the subject, has anyone replaced their fuel line from the deck fitting to the tank?

I changed my exhaust configuration when I repowered, from the starboard side to the transom, real pain, CG approved exhaust hose very hard to work with and expensive. I had to use a couple of 90 degree exhaust elbows as the hose was not flexible enough to run a high tight loop b-4 I ran the hose down thru the rear cabin out the transom. I also used a vetus water lift muffler and I am happy with the results of the whole system.... Red

Well, I took no one's advise and moved the exhaust from the bottom of the transom to the port side a little lower than the top of the ladder so the outlet was slightly lower than the highest point of the hose. Easy access on a 34. Motored for several hours this weekend and no carbon to clean off the transom. More time to drink beer.

I hope you haven't made a bad mistake. The reason the exhaust is low is so that water entering it from a wave etc has to climb up to the top of the loop before it can flood the engine. If the loop is all the way up under the coaming like on mine, this is not likely to happen. If I understand your new location, what will keep water from flooding the engine when you are close hauled with the rail down ,the outlit is buried under water and the engine is now at the same level as the exhaust outlet. Not a good situation.

Dave, we have a Catalina water box/muffler.

Vetus makes 1 5/8" hose adapters in 90 and 45 degrees. I used a 45 degree one to replace a short section of that exhaust hose right above the muffler before a replaced the whole length.
