We have a Yanmar 4JHE 54hp engine on our 2006 H41DS. As long as I have owned the the boat the exhaust has "spit" out water while running. Not a steady flow but an occasional rush. I have checked and changed the impeller regularly and never found a problem. I have always thought it was normal and never questioned it but I saw a post on another forum that says this is indicative of a exhaust problem. Is that the case? Your thoughts please!

Every diesel I have ever had spits out water in spurts. It seems to build pressure and then release it.

No it is not. An occasional rush of water out the exhaust port is how a waterlock muffler works. Raw water squirts into the hot exhaust and collects in the bottom of the waterlock. Once the water reaches the outflow standpipe, a few inches above the bottom of the waterlock, exhaust pressure forces the water up the standpipe and out the exhaust hose, along with the exhaust gases.

I have seen both indications. IMHO it is not a problem. My genset is well above the water line and the cooling water runs completely down hill through the muffler and exits the hull. That cooling water runs continuously.
My auxiliary is below water line and the water fills into the muffler until it blocks the output port and then the exhaust blows out a blast of water. Or spit of water as you describe.
Relax. You're good.

The "spit" volume changes if you are motoring with some waves.

If your muffler doesn't "spit", you may be in trouble with over heating.
